We have blanket!

I made a blanket for Quince. In my time surfing the internet for items to add to our list of things to buy for him, I noticed that the picnic blanket(those with a vinyl backing to prevent getting wet) are very popular for babies. Of course they are smaller, and boast cute baby-friendly prints on each side. They are marketed as being for when your out playing in the park, or have baby in a stroller/backpack using the vinyl side out to act against rain and/or wind. Rather than spend the money for one, I decided to make my own. I dusted off my sewing machine and took myself to the fabric store. Here’s the results in pictures:

Our living room floor was the only spot big enough to keep everything flat while pinning. Luckily I just vacuumed and the cats were still in hiding from that. 🙂 Otherwise, I’m sure I would have had some help from both of them for this stage. After they were sewn together and then turned right-side out, it’s off to iron the hem! For all the slipping the two fabrics did, I didn’t have a single hole(expect the intended one for turning). My sewing space is rather small, and this blanket is rather large.

After trying a number of different decorative stitches on a sample piece for the top stitch, I decided that for both sides the basic zigzag looked the best. There were quite a few that looked great on one side, but not the other. Overall, I’m quite happy with how this turned out, even though it’s now large enough for both Quince and I to sit on when put on the ground.
