Holidays have arrived

The post about our ten days in Hong Kong will arrive another day. To tie you over while waiting, here are the holiday wreaths and small table decorations I made this year.

After finding these vintage wooden ornaments at a thrift store, I decided to use them to make a wreath. The evergreen base is fake. I picked it up on a great deal using a stackable coupons from my local Joann’s before Thanksgiving. Typically I stick with the grape vine wreaths but felt I should have the fake evergreen style just in case. Good thing, as it pairs perfectly with these vintage ornaments. The burlap ribbon and gifts compliment each other well. I wanted to use some red burlap ribbon however I couldn’t find it. It will turn up sometime after I’ve put away all the holiday decorations.

These beautiful dogwood flowers also came from Joann Fabrics. Normally, I don’t go for the real-looking fake flowers. Often they are too expensive or my local store is sold out! While on this trip, that was not the case. I must have visited shortly after they finished stocking up. Near the floral section was this free diy sheet featuring a wreath and garland set. That was the inspiration for the wreath above. I kept with their colors, but changed several things.

My first of those were the flower choice. As I said before the selection in the finer fake florals sell out quickly, after not finding two or three different flowers that paired well I decided to go with three dogwoods. While hard to see in the photo, the dogwood petals have a touch of gold or iridescent glitter added.  Between the color scheme and flower choice I felt they would look better on a plain grapevine wreath base rather than an evergreen one. In hopes of bring out the gold of the dogwoods, I added more by using the bells and the small gold flowers. Last year I scored the sign at one of my favorite shops shortly after Christmas. It fit perfectly with the colors and style! The burlap ribbon fills the other side out  enough to not be boring. Only thing I would change is to add more of the burlap ribbon. Unfortunately, the piece used here is all there was left.

The tree was already under $5 new, then I got it on an closeout sale pushing the price closer to $2. I walked out the door with two of these wee trees. To help them get festive for the season, all that was added were some holiday flower picks. The galvanized tray was purchased for something else but looks great with the wire balls and tree.

Remember the extra wide burlap ribbon? These are the wooden spools it came on. They happen to have a hole drilled all the way through, making them perfect for small table decorations such as this. Simple, yet beautiful. They stand on their own well or pair it with others for a full centerpiece. Presently each one sits on either side of our front window.

Being a yarn loving person I couldn’t resist this guy. He needed some cleaning and a new bow but I could tell there was still life left to give. The sign was cleaned, his fur got a vacuum,  and the dated/worn ribbon was cut off. Finally he was brightened with a new bow.

This fun wreath was made to live at my friend’s house. She’s a huge mid-century fan. Their Christmas tree this year is a cute silver tinsel tree with pink lights. It inspired this wreath. I picked up the pink glitter flowers in hopes of trying to break from silver and blue. However they have never really fit anything in my house when it comes to holidays. I’m pleased to say it looks amazing at her house.
